Between the Shadow Warriors and Special Forces of Magic, the Empire is honestly terrifying. I have no doubt Frieren, Fern and Stark will come out fine out of this, but anyone else is uncertain in this situation. Although, Frieren says Serie is un-killable, so I will trust that judgement too

I don’t want to think that it’s just a simple case of these people being manipulated into following some flimsy anti-magic ideology by a demon.

I’d wager they’re trying to imprint some kind of concept into the common consensus of people (maybe including demons) by having Serie, who’s known as the epitome of all magical knowledge, killed in the capital of the strongest magical civilization humanity currently has by a non-magician. Magic is related to what can be conceived by one’s mind, after all, so their intention might be to imprint a certain idea by killing notable magic users.

I really like this development. The portrayal of magic is seen as a treasure and a threat, with each side out for each other's necks. It's getting REAAAALLLY tense here, can't wait to see what happens

I read that more as they want an end to the magic community, or in other words, they want to end all outside development of combat magic so they can have absolute magic superiority. They probably think that with the demon king dead, they alone have enough power to deal with remnant demons. We know they don't, but their whole organization is based on the arrogant idea that they don't need oversight because they know what's best for the country. This is just the next step in that line of thinking.
