This arc frustrates me because in any other manga it would be a fantastic portrayal of demons. But it doesn't fit here. It's the opposite of the overall theme of the entire series, about Frieren's interactions with the other races that make her seem cold and alien but that are subtly still similar to them. Yet here there's the demons that are sociopaths and it's simply "no, no twist, they're just sociopaths". It feels contradictory for it to be played straight and it kept making me wait for a twist, not because I wanted a twist, but because it seemed like what made narrative sense. And not having leaves me saying "okay, what's the point?" not because I think it needs one instead of just being a neat adventure, but because it made me expect one.

I like this chapter but it doesn't make sense that the demon nonchalantly killed the guard. I mean immediately afterwards he tells Frieren than the diplomacy is just beginning I understand they want her out of the way but how would they have covered up the missing guard? It would have made more sense to me if Draht would have told the guard some bullshit to get him away or made some kind of excuse even just sneaking into the prison would have made more sense.
I might be a little to early with my criticisms though maybe it will be explained in the next chapter but it really takes me out of the story when a seemingly smart plan has dumbasses like this in it or stupid flaws that wouldn't make any sense.

I don't think the point is that the demons are just sociopaths, I think it's more to emphasize that despite their appearances they just see humans as prey. The point, to me, seems to be that saying humans and demons can be friends is like saying "look, lions and gazelles both have fur and 4 legs, they can be friends right?". Lions can't survive without eating meat, and it's not like they have the technology to grow their own meat like Humans can now, so any kind of attempt to have them be friends would inevitably lead to the lion eating the gazelle, regardless of intentions.

@anon763 Maybe it's to make more obvious that unlike the demons Frieren isn't actualy all that cold and aliens to other races ? But I agree that it turn a pretty subtle narrative thing into a rather 'in your face' thing.

it still doesn't really make sense to wipe out the humans if you need to eat them to live, surely they'd want to keep some human civilization as cattle or something? their goal here is kind of incoherent, are they just golem autonomatons created to be malevolent to humanity?

When someone calmly says they are more powerful than a subordinate's master, you'd think the subordinate would test the waters a bit more cautiously, wouldn't you?
