The old fella talking about influence being more important than power, you didn't consider the possibility that the mage association WANTS to keep the mage pool small to centralize and consolidate power more effectively. Similar to how Jujitsu Kaisen 's clans wouldn't mind murdering each other when the pool of sorcerers is already small
