So the instability would imply that Serie is concealing her true power, right? Meaning that Frieren really isn't the strongest character in the series like I initially thought which does make sense. I'm also a fan of the black comedy in this manga for sure. edit: i mean it's not really black comedy, it just can be oddly funny for a non-comedic series.

The hero party Himmel leads is strong but nowhere close to the strongest.
Strongest hero: The Hero of the south
Strongest mage: Serie the living grimmoire. Serie seemed to be tied with the demon king or the demon king was even stronger than her.

Not strongest mage but still is stronger than Frieren:
-Qual, 1 of 7 sages of destruction. The guy was actually defeated by collective efforts of humanity into countering killing magic.
-Immortal Bose, 1 of 7 sages of destruction.

Frieren herself had lost in battle 11 times, Four of them were Demon, Qual included, one was an elf, and the remaining six were humans.

So no, she's very very far from the strongest mage in the series.

11 times by “mages who stronger than her” mind you, not counted those who she considered weaker.
This was never mean to be the story about the strongest, it’s about the slightly above average, insignificant who archived the significant by luck and effort, while having fun doing it

Even so it's slightly above average for her age. Living long enough makes up for her lack of talent. She's still 1 of the strongest in current era, since most first class won't be able to beat her.

There's this kind of concept you see in a lot of classic fantasy that isn't hard to articulate. The hero who defeats the evil plot is not usually the strongest there is. They are certainly very strong, but there's usually stronger. They're usually in this kind of sweet spot with just enough, and the right type, of abilities to succeed and enough freedom to do it.

The truly powerful entities in these series often have some kind of responsibility or entanglement that prevents them from acting as freely as they could otherwise. Gods have their duties and domains, warrior-kings have kingdoms to run, archmages have their research and towers, master thieves have thieves guilds to run, etc. It's why many RPGs embrace this idea that as you get toward max level you basically start to write yourself out of the PC role and more of a supporting role.

I don’t know if that’s the right way to think about Mages in this series. Even Serie, the generalist “strongest mage” in both spell and mana quality can still get cut down by some weirdo like Ubel if the situation is right. Like Methode said, it’s a game of Rock, Paper, and Scissors. A very complex one where, sure, you can heavily minimize the risk of a fight and can out-skill counters/horrible matchups, but it still carries that risk.

Frieren is definitely an anomaly in aptitude, definitely to the point I wouldn’t say she’s just “slightly above average”. Even ignoring the inherent insane advantages a pseudo-immortal like an Elf would have in magic in this setting, she seems to be quite skilled. Seven Sages aren’t recalling her as The Slayer and Humans aren’t referring to her as the “last great mage” for nothing, and even in the initial flashback with Flamme she picks things up rather quickly and is the strongest mage of the elven village (even though she’s implied to be especially young then).

Frieren is extremely good in a fight, but she doesn’t have the warmongering attitude of Serie or the plain indifference to murder like Ubel. “Stronger than me” is suuuper situational and malleable. She might rarely lose a fight cause of her inherent attitude towards herself and magic, but she’s clearly a behemoth in the world of magic in terms of knowledge, mana, and spell capability.

I mean shit, not too long ago her clone was getting ready to kill Fern with a stare lmfao

I think you missed the true significance of the fight with the clone. The fact that Fern, a girl who has been studying magic for only around 10-12 years at most, could force the Frieren clone to use a risky technique full of openings like that means Ferns has massive potential. And we see that confirmed in this chapter and the next one, as Serie gets smitten with Fern's talent and wants her to be her disciple.

Nah, I'm well aware of the significance of using a spell she last used against the demon king. Just saying that she has an unbelievable amount of shit up her sleeve

I have to wonder if Frieren could also see the instability in Serie's magic. I have to imagine she could, or at the very least, knew she was doing it even if she couldn't see it. It would make sense that the person who taught Flamme to concealing her magic would also be doing the same thing, and I'd be surprised if Frieren didn't make that connection.

i guess they didn't really have a choice since serie's their boss, but i feel like the imperial mage people had to have gotten annoyed after she decided to hold the last exam. they knew she was gonna fail everyone (except fern), which kinda made the whole thing retroactively pointless lmao
