Yeah, upfront combat skills may be nice for short term accolades. Powerful heirlooms might be nice for pre-established power. BUT FOR GOD'S SAKES! All it take is one under-skilled or egotistical jackwagon to lose or destroy any of those things (all it takes is one botched campaign or skirmish to do just that), which with those being a LIMITED resource can effectively cripple any long term advantage you had.
