There may be other dis- words that can fit, but I think you meant deluded, as in they have themselves convinced, disillusioned is more of a disappointment word, meaning you lose your illusions about humanity or goodness usually.

Edit: delusional also works for your second one, but sounds like the wrong tense for the father.
