Just the fact the food was not taken tells you plenty.
it means that the murder was not to steal but for the sake of murder itself.
the latter should be fairly easy to rule out if the person was well liked.

To us it seems they were mercenaries killing just for fun, or that they were hired to do it.
But if they were hired... its a really sloppy job.
