Suggestion to amend rules and make them more readily available

@Zephyrus

Thanks for your advice.

First, I'd like to say I have no idea what the "rules" are.

I've never read them, they're not available from the main page, and today is literally the first time I've ever been to these forum threads in the year-plus that I've been reading on here on almost a daily basis. How could I have possibly agreed to follow the rules if they've not been made available? Until today I didn't even know rules *existed.* Moderators being smarmy about "the rules" seems like pretty silly behavior if you can't even be bothered to make them easily available to users.

Suggestion 1: Put a link from a main landing page and/or comment sections to said rules.

Part 2: I've heard on the grapevine that jokes about sexual assault and rape are forbidden.

Suggestion 2: In a website where there are literally dozens if not hundreds of manga being posted that feature content such as rape, pedophilia, murder, sexual assault and so on, some quite explicitly, having a rule that says "no jokes allowed" seems, uh, poorly thought out. How in the world can it be MORE appropriate to HOST CONTENT with these very themes - and indeed, this site literally hosts manga wherein the characters MAKE JOKES ABOUT RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT, but the users themselves are forbidden to do so?

The irony of people using the report button to complain about a mild joke about sexual assault while READING A CHAPTER OF A MANGA THAT MAKES A SEXUAL ASSAULT JOKE is so thick it leaves a metallic taste in my mouth.

Therefore, I propose:

So Suggestion 2: Users can discuss, talk, joke, etc, about any content allowed on the site. If it's appropriate to host it and read it, it's appropriate to talk about in the forums.

That the rules aren't fairly obvious is a fair point. We assume that responsible users would take the time to read the rules which are located here: https://mangadex.org/rules

The link can be found under the Info drop down in the header.

I will talk to the devs to see if we can make a simple line/link/notification that points the user to the rules when they make a post.

As for the rest, I disagree with your assessment. Just because we allow content that is controversial to be hosted on MD doesn't mean we have to allow hateful comments or jokes revolving around that content. If you can discuss said controversial content in a way that still follows our rules, great. If not, consider not posting.

@LysandersTreason I disagree with your whole post to be honest. Almost every site has policies and you not being aware of it is not the fault of the site.

For a reader the essence of the rules itself is pretty simple. Don't start fights or needless drama and be civilized. Even without reading the rules, these things should be basic courtesy.

Moderators being smarmy about "the rules" seems like pretty silly behavior if you can't even be bothered to make them easily available to users.

This is a dumb argument. This is like saying that cops are being smarmy just because some stole something just because said thief didn't buy the whole constitution.

Part 2: I've heard on the grapevine that jokes about sexual assault and rape are forbidden.
Discussing the chapter is fine game. If there is rape there then the rape in said chapter is open for discussion. It's not even hard to know what's okay or not:

If you read a book with rape themes in uni and are discussing it in class, if whatever you're typing can be said there without repercussions, then it's good enough here.

One thing to note that people tend to forget is that you are talking with complete strangers here and just because it's online doesn't make anything less offensive.

As you say, "doesn't mean we have to allow hateful comments or jokes revolving around that content"

Except that you do allow hateful comments and you do allow jokes that revolve around those content. You allow them to be posted and hosted, when they're contained in manga. If such words were too triggering or upsetting for Mangadex readers, why are they allowed in the manga? I'm not saying there should be no moderation of conflicts or flames or anything else, but how could it be more shocking to see a comment than to see precisely the same thing (and often, much, much worse) in a manga the site hosts? I could find easily dozens of manga where sexual assaults are "funny" and occur for humorous purposes, and where characters make jokes about literal rape.

Why is one OK and the other not OK? If it's allowed for an author to make the joke, it should be allowed for us. Users should exercise the block button to avoid content they don't want to see, and moderator action should be reserved for personal attacks, not attacks based on content that is clearly allowed in other forms.

The rules are there one must simply look for them I know I did before I started commenting on this site, but I do agree with you it is pretty ironic that we can't joke about rape and sexual assault even though the site does host that type of content.

I'm a user and i've read the rules in the past.
My stance on those type of jokes is simple. You can't harass/offend any manga chatacter. I don't care what you say 'bout FICTIONAL characters. Users should not be offended in place of manga characters. Harassing/offending other users isn't fine.
So jokes 'bout characters are fine, jokes 'bout other users may not be fine.

That's my personal stance, ppl may agree or disagree.

What's the point of the comment visibility setting if "bad" comments get removed instead of moderated?

I concur with the part of the type of content that is uploaded but jokes like that aren't ok. I like dark humor and do it myself occasionally. But I also understand MD's view on it.

Personally as Long as you aren't targeting another user with it Im ok. We do have a block function, so people can use that. But as long as MD maintains a constant clear ruling the subgject and doesn't change it at will with mod abuse or something, I am ok with the current rules.

Oh, are we still going on about Kronix and the legality of saying borderline creepy rape jokes like this one repeatedly?

Why? It was a clear cut case of him violating Mangadex rule 5.14 repeatedly

---Kronix
"it's not sexual assault if the girl likes it ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)"

--Kronix
"Beta Cuck * 10, your tears are delicious"
https://mangadex.org/thread/16050/1

--Kronix
"Harouki you never pulled out and ejaculate all over a girl before? they love bathing on that shit ;) "
https://mangadex.org/thread/23599/2

===============
And by the way Lysander Treason,

Tell Kronix your friend, I said Hi.

In that Kronix thread, I think it was Teasday who pointed out the existence of a block user button and suggested using it when you encounter posts you don't like. I second the idea.

Since you want to point out his offense of the "Rules" why don't you take a hard look at your self since you clearly violated rule 5.1.5 which states no direct personal attacks without the evidence to back your claim.

https://mangadex.org/thread/150197/3
Hey, Kronix. I guess you are an Alt Right Troll After all
You spent the whole time in that forum accusing him of being Alt Right with nothing to back it up besides a it's a slang for them
He's using Alt Right insult Slang. It's basically politicized Insults.
even though he specifically told you he wasn't
I am not alt right or a fucking political activist.
So not only where you making personal attacks against him by labeling him as "Alt Right" you kept constantly harassing him, if he got banned for breaking the rules why shouldn't you also be banned?

Also I have noticed that you keep trying to bring politics into this site hell you even made a thread about Trump https://mangadex.org/thread/148798 I find this disturbing as it seems to me you want to actively start drama involving politics which is why Kronix thread got locked (for starting drama).

My point being get off your high horse when your doing the exact same thing just spouting different words.

Unfortunately, once again we have veered off topic and into the realm of drama. This thread is no longer productive.
