A two-front attack is hard to defend.
She's trying her hardest to get her son, a gloomy introvert entirely by choice, to open up and make decisions that define him as an individual. She's worried about his social development and throwing everything she can at the wall to see if some of it will stick. Maybe the hair, maybe clothes, maybe an earring...just, y'know, something.
