I think this might have been the most obvious fake out I've seen in any manga...
Them pulling off a sneak attack in this situation is insulting to the characters in the story and us the readers.

It's like the author went, it's been a few chapters, surely everyone forgot about these girls being sus as fuck by now right? I mean they've been crying so long, clearly harmless.

This and the transition was weird likely because it was meant to show just how fast they attacked Garen. Gives readers the sheer surprise and shock at how suddenly they attacked him like how the MC felt. 0 time to process how suspicious the scenario was. Just instant and effectively taking out the strongest person there.
