What the hell is he doing? He should be aware of how his girlfriend feels when it comes to Suzuka(for obvious reasons) and he chooses to go with her to pick a present? Uhh...nevermind, just get over with the incoming missunderstanding

He's just not suited to her in the first place, and that's the problem. The friend was right- he's trying to force himself into the role without really thinking about what it entails. At least with Suzuka, he has had a legitimate connection. Honoka? Nothing but 'she cute hurr hurr', and relying heavily on her infatuation with him. The relationship was a sham from the beginning, but he is too much of a seat-of-the-pants kind of guy to have realized that until Honoka's friend pointed it out, and even then he's still not in the right headspace.

Honoka was pretty much literally asking for him to hang out with her on the day off, a day before her birthday, which feels like it'd be a great way to celebrate it, in my opinion. But he was too caught up in his own thoughts and unable to actually understand Honoka to realize this.

He's too consumed with the idea it has to be a material gift, when maybe she'd be satisfied with a legitimate date as a gift, since I wonder if they've even had an actual date yet. All we've seen were those nights in the garden during the training camp (more rendezvous than date), and then the outing that was for meeting Honoka's friend Nana, which disqualifies it as a date. I suppose you could try to count her making dinner for him, but the one time we were shown didn't end well.

Hell, if she wants something, they could get it during the date, too. Why does it have to be given exactly on the day? I've known plenty of birthday parties celebrated on the nearest weekend instead of the day of birth among my acquaintances.

In any case... like I said, it's obvious he's not suited to the girl. The longer this faux relationship is dragged out, the more he's going to end up hurting her, I feel. If he wants to lessen the pain, he needs to come to terms with his own feelings for Honoka vs his feelings for Suzuka and tell it to her straight.
