A catapult wouldn't be particularly useful in such a light skirmish, but since it seems like they're getting into a chokepoint, the targets may actually gather up into a nice blob

Indeed, but given the number of troops that are comming right on Xiao Feng, and how packed they are, he can use the catapults to kill a whole bunch of troops before the fight starts.
