I lean on the former. I don't think Miyako is flaunting her income enough that her sister would find it unrealistic that the money only came from her part-time job and former intern work. Miyako still claims that she's broke so it's not she's stashing the money under the mattress and her sister found it one day.

At the very most, Miyako's sister might find it unusual to see Miyako not in the house as often as before and that's if her sister doesn't think she's studying more on-campus.
