I'm having a hard time figuring out how this society even survived before Tidus.

In our world H. erectus were using skewers a million years ago, Neanderthals and Denisovans were smoking fish, making combs and making charcoal hundreds of thousands of years ago, hoes like the soldiers were wowed by were being used at the start of the Neolithic 12,000 years ago, wheeled carts are at least 6,500 years old, waterwheels date back at least 2,500 years ago.

But then they fairly sophisticated technology like metalsmithing.

This chapter (that wasn't released in any volume, apparently) seems almost identical to the chapter 14 released in volume 3, 1 hour before this one.

I was wondering why this was bugging the hell out of me.

Sunuvabitch. Yet another case of world building without homework.
