I have a few theories. One is that he's third in line for the position of village head, after his parents. Two is that it might be some cultural oddity where he was born on the third (like how Bam in Tower of God is named after his birthday, 25th Bam) or was the third child born that year. The most likely explanation, I think, is that he had two older siblings who were stillborn or otherwise didn't make it to their first birthday. Recall how they have a ritual to celebrate how a baby becomes a proper person on that day.
