Yeah it's indeed what happened in the novel.
Exactly it's said the root grow quickly at first and slow down but the root of nie li don't slow down.
He didn't want to have to many attention so it's stop before his score grown to something unprecedented.

Why do I think those roots have nothing to do with talent but with the soul cultivation?

@donutdrawer
From the wiki Nie Li is
Dark spirit root
which is the last level after heaven spirit root./

@Kayriel @Legion_01 What is manly depends on the culture. The muscle-bound, half barbarian looking macho MC might be just a Western thing, as far as I know. It could also be a very modern thing. From what I've seen over the years, the East Asian cultures seem to prefer a more refined countenance for an MC, even if they happened to be supreme martial arts experts. In fact you can see it in RL when you compare what sort of dudes East Asian women generally lust for, as opposed to the West (if you are to believe magazines, Youtube, and such). What comes to xianxia specifically, I'd say the main characters there display even more decisiveness and ruthlessness than any Western heroes, which can also be considered a very masculine characteristic. A xianxia hero might try to look elegant and refined, almost like a scholar, whereas a Western hero might try to look like an asskicker warrior. It says absolutely nothing about their sexual preferences, and if you think it does, you are looking it through a culturally conditioned filter.

That being said, I won't try to deny anything you said about how homosexuals, or anything even suggesting it, are usually treated in the average fantasy works over there. Even in mainstream manga they are very often joke characters. And that's in Japan with freedom of expression, unlike in China with all sorts of draconian laws and customs.

Not really a spoiler, the author just did not want to draw another page to explain this but - from what I remember - the WN explains at this point that Nie Lie reached Heaven Spirit Root in an instant as opposed to gradually have the roots progress each rank and if he didn't pull out his hand very quickly the roots would have split one more time (9-Grade Heaven Spirit Root), turn black and jump into a higher, unknown rank. Even though the examiners failed to see, Nie Lie did notice that the 9th root was already starting to form and the entire root system was already turning black as seen in the manga.

@Kaarme

I never once said or intoned it had anything to do with their orientation. Simply that the ones who look like and dress like women (from much of the world's perspective) are also the same ones who are afraid of/hate/want to kill the gays. It's a little ridiculous. Especially given that there are usually many bronzed, muscle-bearing, hairy men IN xianxia (Bearing in mind that darker skin in Chinese culture has meant one of lower status, as they have spent much of their time in the sun, likely working for someone else). They're just viewed as warrior-for-life brutes who 'aren't as good at fighting' as the effeminate-looking main character who can wipe out their country with an indifferent smile and a flick of a sleeve, to say nothing of the burly men themselves.

I understand the cultural divide and what goes into a culture's views on many subjects, just that this one is more than a little silly, if not downright offensive, in my book.

@mahtan you f*cked up. You should have put everything in the spoiler tag... Also,

There is no way for us to know if black spirit root is the highest level. It's certainly the highest level so far, but who knows if there isn't a higher level. There's just no information about it. Even Nie Li himself was confused when he noticed it changing to black and he's very experienced. And yes, I'm up to date with the novel.

@kayriel yhea alright, you feed off political movements and just casually talk about it through your own spectrum on a Tales of Demons and Gods comment section while it's irrelevant to the story.
If you like the lgbt political movement then just go on whatever crap social media to circlejerk thanks just like everyone using politics like it's opium.

For the info, she's just dressed as a man because in a world where most martial artists are men, she'd be looked down upon, that's it. There's no gays in the story lol? Like if a guy is effiminate/ muscular tanned-type then he's gay? You're full of stereotypes even in your own words. Why are you using "lgbtq" to talk about an homosexual?

Can't believe people are being brainwashed to the point of including everything together like everyone is a fucking hotpot just because of murica's softpower. A good character can't be described with his sexuality alone, otherwise he's an anti-character; he appears to be a subject while he's just an object or a representation (often in a stereotyped way). It makes me think about people just watching a series on Trashflix because one of the characters are from sexual minorities. Do you think you're watching a series based on good characters or characters' sexualities. You could but wouldn't that mean that you're watching garbage instead of watching good works of fiction? Do you think anyone gives a shit about sexuality in LOR for example ?

Grow up, as someone stated you're oblivious to your critical-thinking flaws from outside influences...too much images, too much images.

I swear to god i was 100% confident that NieLi was going to have some shitty spirit root to get mocked by everyone only later to be revealed that it was some kind of misunderstanding or something.

That's like literally what happens in every other xanxia out there. It's fresh to see something like this even if its such a simple thing.
