He's a fighting man. It's an entirely different thing to fight against multiple opponents than fighting a single one. Just two opponents, provided they can coordinate their movements and attacks, will be more than just twice as difficult. Predators working as a pack do work together. It would have been useless to try to fight the pack, so he decided to run. It only succeeded because of the cliff. Not to mention he had lost his weapon. Without the weapon, he wouldn't have fought the first beast either.

Why is the author placing his hands next to each other on the stick, instead of spacing them out to have proper leverage?! It looks so awkward...
