It's not hard to do so but from a storytelling stand point it more interesting for the companion to be a slave as it open up new story elements to explore and even more for character development.

I didn't really think about it when I watched the anime, but going from a perfectly normal Japanese man to someone buying child slaves without a second thought in a single day is too far a jump, even for what he went through. I feel like there should have been more moral degradation before he got to this point. Nonetheless, I love this story.
