The kid is likely a after apocalypse child, so she was possibly a variant but too young to show clear signs, that is if this zombie parasite did infect everybody alve and being able to keep consciousness and not rotting is a anomaly trait, maybe they were normal humans that survived for years..

It's strange. Most of the time I get mad at an author for writing too slowly and dragging out the plot with filler or blathering. But this manga has the opposite effect on me. Plot elements keep happening and it's like they don't even have any time for you to think about them or feel anything about them before something new happens.
