rotting brain for transplant?
how would they even preserve their own brain?
could've just preserved them digitally and altered the brain of the new host
or better yet become android

Heck yeah I love that every early dude here loves this manga. Cause I like this manga and think it's awesome. From the survival skills, logical thinking (waiting for the sun to make a move cause at night it's dangerous), almost chilled realistic post-apocalyptic vibes.

My speculation:
Something must have gone horribly wrong in the lab and that's where the birth of those weird monsters and now we have a time jump to where the MCs are.

Edit: ooh and the simple yet beutiful artsyle. Love it.

Like i didn't despise the old crone, she shows that she is even more than just a spineless twat, she is a complete coward too.

Yeah, i was a little on the fence about the stories being in different time periods, but like the idiot i am, i forgot to account for the obvious possibility that Maru is the baby of Tokio, which would explain the mention of them being alike.

"Those weird monsters" are now the adorable kids gamboling about with their new friends as shown in the first few panels.
Or at leas that's I would very much bet on.

Ms Director is letting her mask fall off a little more there. Btw, is the painting in the background a reference to anything?

Right, I forgot that brain transplant it's possible since Kiruko is in his sister's body. So if there's a time gap between the side of Maru's travels and Tokyo's side story that means he's searching his mother?
Because at first I thought Tokio might have twins.

Digital preservation is not a feasible way to achieve immortality for the person in question. If a digital copy of your biological brain is created with all of your memories and personality fearures intact, the original you will still continue existence and die when your bodily functions cease. Your existence will end there while the copy will branch out on its own experience of existence at the moment of creation. For the copy the experience will appear continuous because as far as it's concerned it has fallen asleep in one body and woken up in another; you, on the other hand, won't get to somehow transfer into it upon death. No matter how many copies are created, the original is still bound to their brain. So it's definitely not an option for the Director.

This chapter was like, boom boom boom. Maru was born, but did Tokio not survive? Giving birth like that, not knowing anything, how terrifying. Director lady couldn’t resist the temptation switched to full on villain monologue. Then the guy from Kiruko’s past at what looks like a rundown Heaven facility.

This manga was the best mangadex homepage discovery I’ve made this year. It’s the kind of manga where rereads pay off.

@TRNSHMN I’m completely absorbed by your theory about the doctor and now have to go back and reread his appearance chapters.

I was drowsy while reading this chapter. The part with the brain transplant plan shook me awake, though. Grisly! So this is when those shenanigans started, chronologically speaking (accepting the theory that the heaven scenes are set in the past). The mangaka's artwork seemed a bit sloppy in this chapter, but as I've learnt with this and earlier series of his, you should never underestimate Ishiguro Masakazu... he can and will surprise you.

@moozooh how do you differentiate between the copy and the original? (Given that it is a perfect copy), as far as they are concerned both of them are the same.

I agree that after copying the brain both the "original" and the "copy" will have slightly different experience but that hardly matters. After the "original" dies you can consider the "copy" as the same person.

@greyhud90 yeah I wonder if they found a way to prevent neurons from ageing But not the whole body

The original knows who the copy is, but more importantly, if they want to achieve functional immortality for themselves this won't help them in any way. For other people, sure, it won't matter too much as long as one of the two is around, but at least in this case the person wants to do the transplantation exactly because she doesn't want to die.

Very interesting manga. I can say with pretty certainty that the school part happened in the past.
Haruki's chapter (ch 9) put's him awakening from the coma to around 2035, at around 12 YO. Him being 18 would put this 6 years later, or happening in 2041. Because we know the cataclysm happened 15 years ago when he was 3, we can see it happened in 2026.
In ch 17 there is an timestamp on one of the cameras that reads f17/10/28, and Japanese date format is YYYY/MM/DD, pointing to the happenings being in 2017 or 2028 if the year is last. Neither of the dates really match when the disaster should have happened tough, so that might have just been Aperture/MM/DD , even if an f17 aperture is really weird for that context.
Some way it all could make sense is if 2035 was the current date, which would set the disaster for 2020, which would match really nicely with an 2017 date on the recordings.

Robin!

And here it is. The director was so casual about it, what a scum. It's the same deal as the Primes in The 100, achieving immortality by raising people as cattle to bodysnatch them.
