How is it fucked up? The person is dead.

The body then is partly cut so that the birds can better get everywhere. Neither fire nor earth have been tarnished with the sinful flesh (important in Zoroastrianism and Manichaeism) and it's assured that it nurtures nature once more (cyclic stuff - important in Hinduism and most schools of Buddhism), furthermore the body is on a good way off to the everblue sky that way (important to Tengriism).

@kazaddum - Watching the remains of your dead grandson be devoured by a bunch of vultures is kinda fucked up.

It's disturbing yes...but in the past. Such situations were thought to happen.

I feel bad for this woman to left such a horrible image in her mind

This is so sad, but I'm happy they were both able to find some company in each other ?

Now that I'm reading it... it's nice how we get chapters from other characters now and then, to flesh out our views of the main character from the viewpoints of others.

Sky burial would definitely seem fucked up to people like us, but to them it's the same as any other funeral the same way we bury or cremate our dead. A very rare but interesting bit of culture.

It isn't disturbing or horrible to the relative who saw that like you guys think. It is their culture so they got used to it. What seems horrible to you is just a normal thing to them. In their culture, if the dead wasn't properly sent off this way. he/she can't be at peace.
As someone who like to do research on other cultures, I would advise people to not speak negatively about others' customs as it is disrespectful. Thinking is fine just not speak out loud. As an Asian, sometimes I feel irritated when hearing people telling that our custom is weird.

@miyako19 them westerners always think that outside of their culture. Every other culture isn't civilised enough. And need to be changed. Well their train of thought aren't changing since colonization era.

Sky burial isnt really that fucked up unless you were made to watch it. You dont exactly watch people getting cremated inside glass box do you?

There's just something about Kan Shiba's facial expressions on page 20...
