Or is it more something like...the energy you generate from love is proportional to your max mp? Or maybe the amount of mp you've spent? And the only reason this generation was noticeable is because she had such vast amounts of magic to start with?

...Or maybe you only gain the ability to regen mp by reducing it to zero in the first place. It was stated in chapter 1 that most witches never run out of MP in their lifetimes... And it seems unlikely that they would have gone to the effort to interview witches who had run out of MP... Hmm...

Okay, but to answer this question seriously and not just meme it up, they discuss in chapter 24 how Nayu has a very rare "color" of magic - pure white - that was difficult to research because they couldn't find anyone else with that color of magic. So it's possible - likely even, given that the the witch community wasn't already aware of this possibility - that this "recharge via love" quality is unique to white magic.

I love how the “twist” actually makes a lot of sense in the world. She was never able to replenish her magic because she was never able to love someone unconditionally. She was arrogant and never relied on anyone, so she never felt love. Even when she was around the guy she liked, she mostly teased him because she didn’t know what love was. Then when she realized that she might be in love, and the test confirmed that, yes, she was deeply in love with him that things started to change. Then the big twist is that when she openly shows affection is when her magic can recharge, which makes so much sense.

Now that i think about it, it is possible that witches rarely run out of mana because they unintentionally recharge it by having a specific feeling according to their "color", and those feelings happen to be very common that practically everyone does it long before they run out of mana. That's why nobody even realized that you can even recharge your mana that way.
