For a thesis, understanding the underlying principles of how anything works would seem to be better than just inventing something new. Understanding how something works on a widely unknown field, seems like magic in their world is still a budding flower. Our civilization has progressed well in the industrial age and the Renaissance as people started trying to understand the laws in how the world operates... A magical revolution might be near since she's got the motivation to completely(or as completely as a human can, I guess) understand magic.

Research on fundamentals is amazing, but realistically it takes a loooooong time unless the scope is significantly limited even with her having a different perspective and knowledge.

A simple example in real life is the research into fundamental matter, it took many decades and many brilliant minds to solidify the atomic theory and elements. Also even now the research into further fundamentals of atoms is still ongoing and will continue into many generations in the future.

Let’s see what she does, hope the story just doesn’t skip past the toils.
