For a thesis, understanding the underlying principles of how anything works would seem to be better than just inventing something new. Understanding how something works on a widely unknown field, seems like magic in their world is still a budding flower. Our civilization has progressed well in the industrial age and the Renaissance as people started trying to understand the laws in how the world operates... A magical revolution might be near since she's got the motivation to completely(or as completely as a human can, I guess) understand magic.
Research on fundamentals is amazing, but realistically it takes a loooooong time unless the scope is significantly limited even with her having a different perspective and knowledge.
A simple example in real life is the research into fundamental matter, it took many decades and many brilliant minds to solidify the atomic theory and elements. Also even now the research into further fundamentals of atoms is still ongoing and will continue into many generations in the future.
Let’s see what she does, hope the story just doesn’t skip past the toils.

I still remember as a kid hugging my old dog for the last time, knowing it was likely the last time. That scene perfectly resonates with me. o7 to all the good dogs.

This chapter made me think of having to put our last dog down, and snug my current doggo extra hard.
This author is such a dick.
@shizusazu that really is a weird name for being from El-Shaddai; it should probably end in "-el," in some way.
But this series is really interesting; the attention to details that you would notice as an adult in a child's body is really well done, and the world building is so adroit as to leave only the right parts to the readers imagination.
I'd hate to be there as anything socially below an Equites, but being of a Senatus Family would also suck for all the reasons of unchecked power.

Like Micha-el, Rapha-el, Uri-el, Uzi-el, Gabri-el, and other, similar Hebrew names...
Also, the combination of "Lan+th" isn't the start of any name in Hebrew; like, at all, ever.
Not a thing in men's names in Hebrew.
Which isn't a complaint, or anything; I think it was mentioned when we first met Lance-Baruq that his name was all wonky, and entirely non-Hebraic.
Non-Semitic? Un-Kosher? Maybe his name is Taraf...?
Anyway.
Based on its location, one would think that they would be remnant-tribes of Israel; Rueben, Manassah, and perhaps Efraim? Or perhaps they are just Hebrew? They really couldn't be "Jews," as there wasn't any talk of Temples being destroyed... though during a time slightly before this, there were Hebrew Temples in multiple cities due to tribal factionalism eventually leading to the land being called Judea, and the inhabitants eventually being called "Jews," but... that is only after a final diaspora and the... Second? ...Third destruction? Well, at this time, the Utter and Final Destruction of the Temple.
So, really, they're currently Israelites (ish) of El-Shaddai.
