Also, this is not the first time in this series (or series that this author has) where there is some plot-heavy antagonist, but the room director is constantly providing a different plot than the one I was trying to follow and is quite distracting.
Not that I mind too much.

I get that he could've experienced even more extreme abuse when it comes to the working hours during the workweek, but that line is just so, so insanely retarded.

The Lab got presumably 140 hour work weeks (most definitely no weekends compared to the probably undercut, but still present weekends back in Japan), the only accomodations for rest are your work desk, the stone floor under your feet and some stimulant drugs, oh and you get executed if you fail too bad. That's beyond black by any metric, and he even acknowledged as much last chapter. So why the fuck would he dial it back to "not black, yet" now?

He's being cautious in his assessment, like, "they are in medieval, maybe people back in medieval times had to work harder". And also the lab people are actually enjoying their job, maybe his past job was absolutely unfulfilling and that's the final criteria that must be met for him to call it a true black company.
Also the joke is that, no matter how bad the lab is as a workplace, Yuuji considers his previous employment worse. As ridiculous 4 hours of sleep is, he was getting less, and no drugs.

That's still pretty black. Even if you're an emergency responder, you need teammates to cover your rest. Otherwise you start making serious mistakes that cost more money to fix than paying for a relief worker's wage, or worse, endanger people's lives.

About the only time it's ethically responsible to go without rest is if people are endangered and you're the only person who can help them.

We had teammates. We were all called in on duty when the casualty came in. Everyone was called in and that's how bad everything was.
Edit: I want to emphasize that leadership was there doing those same hours too. We had everyone we could call in and that was still how bad it got.

Talking about it unlocked another memory where there was an electrical fire that started off with an explosion of plasma. The on duty tech was right infront of the load center when it spawned a blue fireball and exploded.
