Based off the explanation, they must have though. They made the outer square, subtract the 4 triangles to get the area of the inner square, and got the side based off the area of the inner square. They are quite literally, finding the root of a square from the area.
Interestingly, real life history somewhat justifies the teacher.
At the time when Pythagora was alive, numbers were believed to be whole and nothing else; finding the concept of a square root and especially the root of 2 which is neither a whole number nor representable through the division of whole numbers, shook the very core of the mathematics known at the time and some people even kept this knowledge secret to avoid repercussions in other areas of their society.
With some handwaving we can pretend something similar happened in the world this comic is set in, so while the operation of obtaining the square root is known, the implications behind it are not.

A lot of math concepts already manifested some way in ancient civilizations, but only got a solid definition way later in history.

I was expecting the sensei to ask him to pull out the Derivation to arrive at the Pythagorean formula.

Lol he just put the formula as is.

Are you referring to the pythagorians? Small detail, they believed all numbers were rational, not whole (they had grasp a concept of positive integers). IIRC from my history of math class (cause thats a thing), it wasn’t the concept of square root is the issue, it’s the issue that it can lead to irrational numbers (hence the term). The concept of pythagorean theorem (or in the teacher’s case, he just uses the proof of pythagorean theorem) only works if you understand you can break down an area of a square into its sides x its sides. As I mentioned, the only way for the teacher to go from an area of a square (which he got from making a bigger square and then removing the triangles) to its sides is if he understands the basic concept of a square root. Hence, he must know of the concept. Irrational numbers is a different topic.

Too many people are cocky and have inflated egos, even if someone has a good rep for excellence there are still people who dont listen to people in charge

The thing I mentioned was told me during a philosophy class in high school so I might misremembering some details.
My point anyway was that things are not necessarily obvious as they say. The concept of square root is there, but it might not be recognized as such, or it might not be named so they don't know you are referring to it.
Also, irrational numbers are inevitably connected with the square root: what is square root of 2? And of 3? If the maths of this world doesn't know about irrational numbers then the percieved concept of square root is not the real one and for all we know applying the theorem to a triangle with sides of size 1 (d^2 = 1 + 1), might be considered an unsolvable problem.

The dude uses a simplified version of the formula, which we are familiar with. It appears that the teacher uses a longer, mundane, and tedious version of the formula, which is useful for understanding the basics but not really practical in everyday life.
