1. Apparently that's not the case in this series seeing as after 10 days it's not a ghost town. Also again they don't know any better. It's like questioning how someone who came from the mountain is confused drinking sea water is not a good way to stay hydrated.
2. The whole town is covered in snow, I'm pretty sure you can freeze to death within minutes in that sort of weather as well.
Also the place isn't as airtight as it seem, as obviously seen in the chapter where the MC can see smoke leaking out the windows.

Why yes I'm not an expert in wood cutting/kindling or anything like that, I just try to give explanation as given in the chapter, but apparently you assume everyone must know these info despite most urban locations no longer use kindle for fire is...eh.
Then again it's a world with magic, have you consider that maaaaybe they just don't work exactly as ours?
