Frankly, this is the most annoying part of his character in that he doesn't take risks unless forced to. He also has a habit of trying to solve things with brute force until it doesn't work, then he remembers his other skills and tries to be more strategic.
Then the author needs to put effort in showing this, as sometimes it looks like he is a headless chicken that is forced to do something to save his skin.
