Frankly, this is the most annoying part of his character in that he doesn't take risks unless forced to. He also has a habit of trying to solve things with brute force until it doesn't work, then he remembers his other skills and tries to be more strategic.

Then the author needs to put effort in showing this, as sometimes it looks like he is a headless chicken that is forced to do something to save his skin.

I do wish that it wasn't just layering more of the same spell but actually bulking up the spell with more magical energy, instead.

It is extra odd given that the last arc was him meeting the saint who used to write spells left and right and he literally read that cursed book. Yet he still uses the same few spells since forever what it feels.
