I get what you're saying but there's never a good reason for the MC misunderstandings. This time there kind of is? His own mother is all "Yo, I hate your face" on her deathbed or something. Fast forward to him seeing people act awkwardly around him, and instead of "Oh, I'm attractive. The girls are shy and the boys are jealous," you get "Ah, they must hate my stupid face too." It's kind of hamfisted but it's more than we ever get for MCs not being able to read what's actually going on around them.
