It's not that cut and dry, I'd say. Some people could turn out like him in that hostile environment, others would go exactly how you said, and then some people might land in different categories from those two. Nature vs nurture is still a widely discussed topic because neither one really seems capable of proving itself much more important than the other in every single case.

It really does depend from person to person. Not everyone who lived in a household of neglect turns out like Tanya (Though, I do love his/her character) a lot of the time they either shut everyone out or as you said, become hostile and violent. In this case, his mother's neglect made him a warm person to be around (Though, Im not exactly sure what you mean by warm. He seems more like a grounded person, with the same logic as Tanya but without the psychopathic attitude.)
