Thinking on it a bit more - I can't really back it up, but my guess is they're included to add another chick into the lineup that, while not relevant to the MC's harem prospects, does offer another character for readers to goon over in their own fantasies along NTR-esque lines of "stealing the harem girl away from her kouhai admirer".Yea, I actually hate that "Crazy lesbian who want to ruin MC for no reason" trope.![]()
It's not like these stories are often getting doujin made of them, and they're so commonplace and cookie-cutter that fan art doesn't make sense, either - at least outside of maybe a handful of readers. So including another girl for fan service doesn't make sense - especially this particular archetype, to my knowledge, isn't really included in those situations.
So, best (but still weak) guess is to satisfy potential netori inclinations among the readerbase.
Or, there's some inherent aspect of the archetype that has historical precedent for Japanese audiences of certain related manga genres, that has since disseminated down into the present day in iterations that don't really resemble the genesis character, but nonetheless still resonate with readers as to warrant their inclusion.
Like the evolution of the Tsundere character, and the various changes and iterations that have been made to the archetype as years have gone by.
Which, I generally like going for the broader option over the more targeted/narrow-focus one, so my second guess is the one I feel more confident in.
