No clue. At best, they can switch out blocks for 7-12.
A smarter calendar would one that strings 9, thin wooden slabs with the appropriate numbers on them.

Maybe the elves that they mentioned are just really high level spirits that have given themselves a corporeal form. I mean it's mentioned that they're skilled at magic and that one grown-up spirit looks a lot like an elf.

Also @Genoshock @Solipsist yeah, that calendar doesn't make much sense. What happens when you get into the double digits for the middle number? Although maybe they have less months than us but with more days (like 9 months in a year or maybe 6) so the extra digit isn't needed? Still, even if they only have 6 months, it doesn't answer what happens after 6 for the double-digit sections though...

Edit: Just realized that the last update to this was a year ago. RIP.

There is actually a trick to that calendar. I guess it's some variety of this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-cube_calendar
Note how the cubes both have 0, 1 and 2 on them, but the other numbers are unique. And how they use 6 twice - both as 6 and as 9.
