This was a step up from the preceding series, and certainly had its moments, but still is very rough around the edges.
The first two arcs were pretty strong (though still not quite equal to some other Mahjong mangas in my opinion). Unfortunately mid way through the author started to awkwardly insert backstory and subplots that never went anywhere (yes, there’s a sequel, but that barely counts).
The final two arcs (Romantei and Homer) felt a bit rushed, and less intensive than the preceding two. They had their moments, but they felt more like highlights, versus the “live action” of the earlier arcs. And don’t get me started on that lame, anticlimactic “arc” (4 or 5 chapters) at the very end.
Also, there were at least two points where the author undercut the drama that had just come before in the story by making things not matter
a tournament that supercedes Kiriya’s efforts to dominate all five Mahjong parlors, and then validation by the final parlor which supercedes his loss at the tournament.
Not sure how I will score this... probably 7 or 8 out of 10.
