Well if I were in your shoes I'd opt for the shorter word every time, helps with both typesetting and consistency

Regarding Birdy's new outfit it's likely the one on the cover of volume 11. I can think of a few explanations:

• it's a replacement since the old suit was destroyed by the antibodies (it's some sort of biosuit IIRC)
• it's a sort of mourning outfit to show regret for killing Nechla. BTW her hair looks shorter than usual, one of the reasons people in Japan drastically cut their hair is to show repentance (OK Birdy is an alien but the author and original audience are Japanese).
• the author decided or got told to freshen up things after a 16-part arc and this is what he came up with (after all a costume change is a staple of superhero comics)
