@taffyx30 Well, if you want, the concept of a platonic romance can be applied to characters of any gender, just remember Banana Fish or more fresh Tsurune. But if under certain conditions and for obvious reasons you could still meet a conversation about non-sexual, platonic love between two women, male love has always been associated with lust and deprivation of purity, so the same principle is rather difficult to apply to bromance.

Using an example of anime from one studio, compare how homoerotic themes are handled in Free and how in Eupho. While both franchises eschew actual homosexuality, Free is noticeably sexier, rougher, and overtly focused on the sexual tension and attractiveness of the characters.

I don't remember the exact numbers, but the largest harems I remember with named characters (so excluding series when the protagonist is pursued by countless unnamed mobs, or have an entire race falling fir him, etc.) are around 10-20 members, so if this series really manages to reach 100 it will be a great achievement. As others said, not only finding a suitable characterization for each heroine would be hard, but even physically draw all of them into a panel would be problematic, so if this mangaends with let's say 30 named heroines and 70 nameless girlfriends I wouldn't be too disappointed. I'm expecting the author to surpass my expectations, though.

Y'know, in the initial stages of this manga I was really worried how this was all going to resolve with the death penalty and all. But now I realize they're probably just going to turn it into a punchline lol.

I'm reading the comments with the dragonball battle music playing in the background, this discussion is being a better battle than many anime battles

All those people talking about whether the author will make the 100 girlfriends, and how it would be possible to fit them. Obviously it won't be possible. And I can bet anything that it would be exactly like in the movie "Sex and Death 101". Where at first the women were names characters, and each had own exclusive encounter, and by the end of the 100, it was just batches of mass encounters with bunch of nameless characters.

Believing something like having 100 girlfriends is not possible in this manga is just like believing the sun is revolving around the world. Or believing black holes never existed. Or believing the world is flat. Anyways great chapt!

This was more fun when the author wasn't trying to force yuri-ships inside the harem, now it's a mess.

Yes guys, I'm unfortunately late to the party. Sorry, not sorry.

I have to admit that while I love this series, I too am more and more bothered by the yuri fanservice the author keeps shoving in. It's frustrating that some girls had more physical intimacy between themselves than with Rentarou.

@Lex79 Same, and I couldn't have said it better than you did, therefore I'm quoting. We have Hakari and Akane hooking up almost every chapter, Hahari trying to mess with everyone, etc all while the MC gets hardly any action (which is dumb, considering the MC is the pillar in harem works), is this what's considered fun/comedy nowadays? I don't understand the logic of yuri pandering in a harem series. It was never a thing anyway because there's no point. I doubt it it's going to stop tho now that it's gotten pretty popular even with people who don't even like harem stuff but are flocking in just because of this fanservice.

@DrHizzle A true yandere would be difficult to fit in, even considering how absurd this series is, since you know, yanderes don't really care about anyone else aside from their love interest.

@SuperOniichan Most of yuri/yaoi fans are elitists since as you've already described, their choice of content is fairly small so they tend to scatter to straight works. This has been true ever since I care to remember, and I've been around for a good while. Def one of the most toxic and infuriating crowds.

@Crevanille When I started reading all this discussion, DxD was the first harem to pop up in my head and I'm glad I wasn't the only one. DxD has imo the best harem dynamics I've ever seen, and boy, I've seen plenty. Having one of the biggest harems there is, with more than 12 girls in love with Issei and a fairly good portion of them actually living alongside him, you don't see this kinda shit. Everyone is part of one big family, they're very well developed and very good friends with each other, but they don't date nor hook around with each other like they do here, this is the only part I disagree with you, the members are clearly very romantically devoted to Issei. I've not read Shin DxD yet but I assume this hasn't been changed because the author knows what he's doing.
In regards to Shinmai Maou, the orgies are always with the MC being the pillar/focus, IIRC, right? They don't have fun by themselves, which is the point of this whole yuri discussion.

@Ultraman You'll hardly see people complaining in /r/manga about something like yuri or yuribait, cuz the ones who do complain usually get swarmed by the fanatics, so people just don't voice what they dislike. And I disagree, when a chapter has yuri pandering, the threads have more than a "small mention" of it.

@lisaisa They don't give a damn about the criticism, but love when we gobble up their works, praise them and help them with their path to success by spreading the word, what a bunch of simple minded folks! Maybe if they listened to criticism (not just western) they wouldn't have so many series axed because of poor decisions.

@Kingseeker Seems that its harem of that kind, when male MC is just reason for bring many girls together. Harem-ish all-female or cgdct like Seton or Qwaser, I can say. Anyway, I don't mind fanservice, I just don't get turning formal straight titles into another yuri bait, what is pretty popular nowadays.

@kingseeker the thing I love about this manga though is that it's a true poly relationship, where everyone isn't just in love with the MC. They aren't just putting up with the others in order to be with the MC, they all are very much so love each other too, with only minor jealous moments that immediately get sorted out. The yandere in this case could be more than just be yandere for the MC, but all the girls as well.

@SuperOniichan This title hasn't been straight since day 1. As I mentioned above, the girls are very much so not only in love with the MC, but with each other too, though they show it to varying degrees. My issue with the yuri bait scenes are more so that it is the main way their love is shown, instead of being shown in a less sexualized manner. (Though the other characters do tend to show it in other ways, so it doesn't irk me all that much.)

@DrHizzle Foe Yay and the sexual tension between girls in love with MCs still doesn't make it any less straight. It would be another matter if it was deeply studied and caused a conflict with their love for male MCs. But instead, even you yourself admit that at the moment it is mostly a sexual fanservice. Of course, you can interpret things so that there is something more than this, for example, reading any friendliness between girls as tantamount to romance, but this, firstly, turns the manga into one big orgy and hentai kinda plot and secondly, proves what the people said above that the yuri crowd is overly obsessed with this thing.

@Kingseeker what is worrisome is that, as we saw in the french kiss chapter, the author is now creating in-story reasons for Rentarou to not get physical with the girls. Compare this to High risk mission therapy (a series I love), where
not only the plot requires the protagonist to periodically rub the heroines, but when they tried to do it between themselves it was painful instead.
Regarding Dxd, I agree with everything. The first true harem series I read, and still the best.

Honestly a great chapter. AND OMG YES! SHE GOT HER KISS. The best part of adding a new girl is when they get their first kiss.

And some more Hakari x Karane yuri action. Rentarou better have a 3-way with them at some point lol.

@SuperOniichan I never liked Qwaser, not because it's filled with boobs fanservice but because it's just dumb. A harem only in name just because the author wants to surf in the popularity of the genre gets no points from me. I don't really like yuri fanservice in a normal, straight series either, I'm just gonna be honest here that's just not what I'm looking for. Turning formal straight titles into yuri bait is just as bad. I actually like yuri, but I'd rather see it when I want to see it, you know what I mean?

@DrHizzle I don't buy that bs about polyamorous relationships in this series tbh. I think the author is just forcing yuri(bait) scenes using the pre-established narrative that they're very good friends with strong bonds yada yada, so the reader thinks there's something going on behind that friendship, which is a trope from every girls only series ever. Remember, having strong bonds while being good friends with someone (as they do here) doesn't automatically mean you're in love with them, nor does it mean you should be. This is one of the very few works I've read where the author is doing such dumb shit. If you want to give yuri fanservice in a harem series (which is at least ironic) at least have the respect to give the MC the same amount of love. Something absurd like Rentarou being the last one to lose his virginity isn't a pipe dream anymore either, I mean, how the fuck are we going to reach 100 virgin girlfriends at the same time when they're already being so kissy kissy with each other now while the dude himself can't even get a proper kiss going without the girl vanishing?

With that said, I also want a yandere girl but like I said, it's hard to make it work. She'll understand that they're all lovers of the same guy and all good friends, while still getting jealous of everyone but not wanting anything to do with them love-related. This works in Renai Boukun (great series btw, I approve). This doesn't work in School Days. It'll probs work here because this is a romcom.

@Lex79 Man, don't even remind me of that chapter, yuri galore for days. It'll probably get worse too. In regards to High Risk Mission Therapy, woah that's a series I also really liked but never finished, I guess I forgot lol. Gonna do it this weekend for sure.
