I just read ch 1 and 2.1 in sequence and I can understand why some people might be confused.

Ch 2.1 actually happens while ch 1 is happening (at least before Ch1 ends). This is implied as the king had just met the 15th Consort in 2.1, which suggests that its the 15th day of the 3rd month (when the 31st day occurs). This chapter will probably explore more of the kings perspective so we understand him more as it draws closer to the 31st (when they finally meet).
