By the way, it's not. Pirates wear eye patches to cover one perfectly functioning eye whilst fighting above deck, so when they go to dimly lit below deck they got one eye that's already adjusted to the dark, so they'll swap the patch on the other eye.

@Frozard That's a fully unproven myth that's been going around because people love parroting it off Mythbusters. In truth, if you only see out of one eye, you lack depth perception and are therefore shit at fighting regardless of the lighting conditions.

@twinklecake Well, apart from that one reputable professor who pioneered optometry and wrote about the subject and got published in a science journal.

Anyhow, if you've ever fired a gun, you'll know that an eye-patch is a boon, not a hindrance. And it's not all that detrimental for swinging a sword either, though the FOV is reduced by one third, it's definitely better than not seeing at all for several moments, then having vastly impaired vision for 10 minutes and somewhat impaired vision for half an hour (after which you're as adjusted to dark as you can be).
