Same. I was expecting something more direct but that was a masterful way of handling him. The MC clearly wouldn't have willingly gone off to war. If he was dedicated enough to pretend to be bad for years, he was going to find some other way out. This way he wants to fight.

This. He got played like a fucking fiddle lol. Dean gave him 2 options but both were for the same purpose. He practicely said
"i will either force you to go (short version) or i will mentally torture and traumatize you to the point that you will beg me to go (long but more efective version since now he is also full of bloodlust and a more useful soldier. Seems like even readers fell for it lol)."

No idea why people praising this asshole other then for being a master manipulator
