I love how the story goes out of its way to tell us about another story that took place before this one begins, one that sounds infinitely more entertaining, tbh.

I'd have loved to read the ...what is this, a webtoon(?) where he is trying to find ways to escape, find ways to earn the trust of those around him, etc, etc. But nah, he's just another stereotypical (literal) white knight shounen hero

It’s just a common writing tactic. For example Naruto starting with showing a demon fox destroying the village but not getting there for quite a while. We will probably get there eventually. It’s WAYYY to early to judge it that harshly yet.
