Knowing the track these stories tend to take, I bet both of them popped out of his novel

I initially thought she was a governess because of her pulled back hair and dark clothes but she was just in mourning like the late queen, except she was at least mourning for her husband, not her fiance. She's a bit conceited too isn't she? Assuming that Alphonse would always propose to her. I think its a good thing that she's starting to realize that Alphonse marrying someone else would hurt her.

Why did she refer to the butler as Meredith?

This series is episodic, with only sets of the stories being related to eachother (the "Cornelius Everdeen" stories, the "Ashley father and son" stories, and the "Ambrose McCloud" stories). The present story is not among them.

As for the name "Meredith" — it is an Anglicized spelling of several Welsh names and is today both masculine and feminine (since the 1920's it has become more frequently feminine in the Anglophone world, but in Wales and among Welsh-speakers it remains masculine).
