It's a weak excuse, but they could just be sleeping from the massive physical and mental fatigue. Hiking can take a lot out of you if you aren't physically active, and they did fall into a large trash hole. I

I have no excuse how that one guy is not screaming in pain from dislocating his arm, or how everyone can seemingly ignore a pile of children's backpack.
