That's the whole point of the chapter. Ichikawa was clever enough to get Yamada was going to condemn herself to a unyieldable harassment from Playboy-senpai and just did something on character to distract both and make Yamada reconsider her decision forced by senpai.

Even if Ichikawa wasn't shy or lacking self-esteem, it was very complicated for him to intervene in Yamada's favour when he wasn't even someone distinguible for her.

Great chapter AND, again, great reader filter. =)

We've been introduced to 'Senpai Pickup Artist', real name Nanjo Haruya. He's a real piece of work. He eventually turns out to be alright, but it takes awhile of him continuing to try and butt in and being annoying for both Anna and Kyo. An upper classman that can't take a hint until it's painfully obvious she only likes Kyo.

Also, this was such an epic moment in the anime, when Kyo threw his bike. King move. Also, it's not gone- classmates get it salvaged, according to the anime, and later on he gives Anna a ride on the back. This trusty chariot continues to serve well for future flirting.
