They couldn't hear anything cuz nothing happend, during the time Yamada and Ichikawa were in the room he just went after her to apologize, when they came back he kicked them out and didn't gave them a cab, so in the end they had to come back by train.

I disagree with everything you said but this, because that would be more realistic and would be an intimate bonding moment that isn't explicitly uncomfortably sexual. Although Ichikawa's habit of putting her on a pedestal might be a sufficient explanation as to why he didn't.

Okay I think you need to reread the chapter again. He let her know that he obviously does want to do it in the future, but he cares about her too much to do it right now.

That’s why she looks so happy in the last page. She just wanted reassurance that Ichikawa felt the same way as her.
