@N0Mi0 scores are subjective and not everyone likes the same series.
Not my view on these 2 series but e.g. someone rating Vagabond 3/10 is as right as someone giving Kanojo, Okarishimasu a 9.
As it goes, different strokes for different folks.

@N0Mi0 There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving the manga you actually like a high rating. That is what it's there for. There will be people who rate it low because they don't like it.

Comparing this SoL romance manga to all the series you mentioned is weird. It's like saying this genre doesn't deserve a high rating no matter how good it is. A lot of people love this kind of stuff for different reasons from why they like GTO, Monster and Berserk (lol).

@N0Mi0 As the other guy said, it all depends on how well you do the thing you set out to do. As a Romcom BokuYaba is one of the best things I've read, genuine three dimensional characters with gradual believable growth growing from strangers to friends to one day, lovers. They both have character development, the fact that male MC gets a lot of growth and development is already one of the best things about this in Romcom manga.

I have read GTO, and it's one of my favourite manga, so much so that I've read every single translated thing from its universe. But it also has its faults, the final arc is not very good, Onizuka himself turns into a superhero later on, so no, it's not more than 9/10.

I have not read Monster's manga, but as for the anime, it had a lot of meanderings and nothing happening which I understand were supposed to build character but many times fell flat. The ending again, was disappointing and the antagonist once again, sometimes felt like a supervillain. So no, it's perfect, at best it's 8.5/10.

Ah, see, you supported my point without even realizing it! That's exactly what I meant by "how should we then score those great works."

We have only one scoring system, it is used in the same way regarding any title. You yourself just said that GTO is not flawless. Monster, one of the best works in its genre, you scored 8.5. Then how in the world by the same system we could give BokuYaba 8-9? It preposterous, and the more you think about what the scoring system implies, the more it is. I am not even saying right now that it is 1-2-3-4-5--10, not 5-10, heck, most people are so ignorant that they use only 7-10.

5 means average. Average means decent work with editors, some considerations and a level-headed author. If you liked it, it worked, and it's 5/10. 10/10 is basically an industry-impacting work that will be talked about for years after and has a high chance of becoming a classic. That's what's 10/10. 9/10 is basically as high as you can objectively go if the work is not your absolute favorite to the point when you fail at finding any actual flaws.
Even MAL has names next to numbers for a reason. 10 - Masterpiece, 9 - Great, 8 - Very Good, 7 - Good, etc.
By scoring BokuYaba as 9/10, you essentially saying that this is a better work than Monster, if we take your scoring.

And, actually, if you just keep in mind those things, I would never mind you giving it even 10/10. What I reprimand is using the scoring system not understanding how, why, and when it works. For those people they have 3 point or emoji scoring.

And we didn't even start to go into actual implications behind average score that you set, which is supposed to be a mean number from art, characters, value, story, etc. scores.

Anyway, I think you get my point. Can I change the way things are? No. Would it stop me from always feeling like calling out people that essentially equal 7 to OK, 8 to Good, 9 to Liked it, and 10 to Actually enjoyed it? God, yes.

And before you could say, hey, this system is flawed, this way light-hearted works will almost always get lower scores: Yes, exactly, and because it is flawed, we have to be strict and responsible with it.

Like Churchill said: "Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.…"
This 10/10 scoring system is not the best, it's the best we could come up with to keep things at least somewhat objective.

@N0Mi0 A 1-10 rating system has always been shit. We all know that. At the end of the day it should at least be used to see how good something did in its own genre. Monster is great and a classic, but it also fucked a few things up, including the most important thing, i.e. the ending. BokuYaba is a Romcom and as a Romcom it has consistently been as good as it can be. I don't disagree with your points but it's also stuff that a lot of people already know about this system, so, what do you intend to do by saying all that here?

@N0Mi0 If a system allows you to rate a product 10/10, then it's totally fair that people would overuse this feature. It's not like Berserks and GTOs and whatnot do not get the same MASTERPIECE 10/10 treatment. The amount of people ready to give a work 10/10 is as much of a valid metric as any, and if a work is not good enough, then less people would be compelled to do so. The way someone uses an available rating system is purely individual, especially when there's no explicit guidelines. Some people use only 10/10 or 1/10; I give 10/10 to the works I really like, and use the rest of the scale for works I did not like as much. I think everyone's rating is fair, so long as it represents what person actually thinks about the product (and that's why I hate review bombings and similar acts - very often they are only tangentially related to the product).
I personally gave BokuYaba 10/10 because man this shit is addictive - I keep refreshing the index every half an hour or so to see if the new translation is up

@N0Mi0 I understand where you are coming from, but as others have said rating a product 10/10 just because you really like it even though it may not be a masterpiece is still a valid opinion, as opinions are subjective. Furthermore, I don't believe it's anyone's right to dictate how someone should or should not rate a product as we all have our set standards on things, regardless of how questionable they are.

@ AWildDUK I don't even know why so many people care, we are literally reading this for free so that rating means nothing here.

@N0Mi0 I know you’re probably tired of being tagged, and while I’d love to go into the psychology of the 1-10 rating system, I’d rather give you some context for the other side of the conversation in case you don’t have it.

The reason why people are pushing for a 9 is because the first couple of chapters are very different from the rest of the manga, it’s setup for growth later on which is something most manga don’t do, most manga you can tell the plot from the first couple of pages, because of this conditioned response, a lot of people thought this was a going to be a poorly written edgelord wish fulfillment plot, not an intricately crafted romcom. As you’ve seen from how many people have argued with you, people passionately love this manga, enough to give it a 10 rating as one of their favorites, and when people love something, they tend to want to share it. People rated this really low and dropped it, and people who stuck with it want everyone else to give it a shot, so they want to raise the rating to how a lot of people actually do feel about it, so those who will love it, might just give it a shot.

TL;DR — People rated it low at first because its beginning doesn’t represent what it actually is and people who love it want other people who might love it give it a shot

I gave Half-Life 2 a 10/10, and I also gave Stalker a 10/10, despite it’s flaws.
Same with BokuYabai and Berserk. Both are 10/10 to me, cuz I love ‘em both. Simple as that lol.
