I just want to thank the reddit poster who mentioned this series in a Kubo-san wa Boku (Mobu) wo Yurusanai post and got my curiosity up. Between these two series, I have now died from an overload of sugar.
Now I'm watching that because of you

Ping me if I am wrong
He became depressed cuz he couldn't get into the school he wanted and all his friends left
@Wickedhero who would not get depress by that both friends pass and he didn't add the fact that he is also an achiever with those thropies in room it most likely add insult to injury
Especially because in Japan there is extreme pressure on students for academic achievements. Even if Ichikawa's parents are relatively chill, there is pressure from teachers, councilors, peers, etc.

I love that you can see the wall crumbling by him dropping the book to embrace her as well and finally really grasp for her too. Eugh my heart can't take this! This is just so pure!!!
I would have never thought about such symbolism on my own. Thank you for pointing it out.

Wonder why he didn’t pass?
So guys, I wonder WHY our boy couldn't get accepted.
Did he fall into the trap of being praised by his "talents", leading to an intelligent but lazy person, failing to organize his studies or have enough dedication? But then he wouldn't be an exemplar student now.
DId he just have an off day?
Did he actually want to get away from his friends? I know it's far reaching but despite what fiction says, most psychological complexes don't happen overnight or over a single event. Maybe he was already beginning to feel like he needed an armor.
We will probably never know because that's not actually the point. Of course, we could take hints based on how Ichikawa was before a tragedy: he was truly a overachiever, with trophies, medals and acknowledgements here and there. Even you can imagine him bragging with his friends about how easy was gonna be for him to enter that private school.

Maybe he totally underestimated the entrance exam and didn't study enough, he studied the wrong topics, there was a interview component he didn't pass, the private school considered he was up to no good or a mixture of all of them. Nevertheless, that failure totally destroyed Ichikawa's self-esteem and that's the whole point: he hated that inferior public school he was forced into and every student in it, so he didn't have any intention about blend in with its activities. And because he had never came in terms with that tragedy, he became in a creepy edgelord who had to feel himself special and different regarding others.

This chapter is about Ichikawa finally coming in terms with his private middle school's entrance exam failure.
