I would never think that the child on the picture is older than 10, i would even say that she look like 7 or something. Atleast considering how age often depicted in manga. But, she is wearing the maid uniform, so it's obvious that she is already apprentice, and not just "daughter of the cook". And we know from the first page that she started at 13. And i'm sure that young commander wouldn't be much older than 18, or something, maybe even 16 at lowest range.
So, probably their age gap isn't that much.

But that picture when he holding her is indeed give quite a wrong image. How the hell that little girl is 13?

@Med1um unless the rank of commander was handed to him right away, a possibility considering the way dragons work, I'd put him at 18 minimum. But damn, puberty hit Melissa late.

well, yes. But i considered the fact that in manga/anime, there isn't really a rare case when genius youth have a high rank. I would even say that they usually younger than older. No need to think too much about this, it's not likely in real life, but it's VERY likely in manga
Also, the fact that his dragon is royalty above all other dragons, can very well hand him the position from the get go, as you said.
And, well, he was son of the earl, regardless of the fact that he abandoned that position, it still can play a major role. Especially considering that his territory is pretty much the "holy ground" of dragon knights, he was there all his life

P.S. I still don't believe that this little girl is 13, despite the fact that i said it myself as fact... But i just can't find any other explanation, so i don't have any choice other than accepting it... and still can't, just look at her! It's preschooler asking kind "oni-san" to read her a book, ffs. Maybe i messed up and misunderstood something in the timeline?

And page 6 of this extra has Melissa mentions she's grown up in the dining hall + working with the dragons, meaning she has been dealing with dragons since long before.
So I think the apprentice part is just her earning the job of maid/attendant apprentice, and the extra of book reading happened way before then.

From chapter 1, her coming of age is 16 and she mentions leaving to become actual attendant to a noble i.e. done with her apprenticeship.

So the earliest he could've met her was when she was 6.

Is this based on a novel? Does anyone know where to find it?

I've assumed around 8 years for the age gap, though I don't think it says. The fact that he is always "commander" rather than memories of him rising through the ranks makes me question that, though maybe he got the position due to dragon rank at a young age.

She's going on 16 in chapter 1 — so this is a prologue. I couldn't find Hubert's age, however, so I don't know what kind of age gap they have.
