I just posted this in the main manga discussion page, but I'm going to paste it here as well, as it's of particular relevance to this chapter, and may explain Dulles' behavior:

I wonder if his curse is going to turn out like the one in the "Sword of Truth" series (it's a US fantasy novel series, not manga). In that series the main heroine has a similar curse/power, where anyone she touches loses their freewill and personality, becoming empty shells of people (their spirit/soul/ego dies, though unlike the Duke their bodies live on as mindless slaves). That causes her to be unable to touch the MC/hero she loves and leaves them in a really similar relationship as the Duke/Maid.

Anyway the following has spoilers for the Sword of Truth series, and my speculation for how the Duke's curse will be resolved in this manga:

They come into a situation where she is forced to touch him, and afterwards she assumes his mind is gone. However, yada yada yada, true love, her power had no effect on him, and they were finally able to have a complete relationship. However, there was a catch. If either of them had known true love could break the curse beforehand, it wouldn't have worked. The MC's mentor knew all along, but couldn't tell them, no matter how much he wanted to help. That may explain Dulles' insistence that Zain destroys the journal in chapters 60/61, as if it contains the 'answer' and Duke/Maid learn of it before they touch, it will ruin their chances of breaking the curse.

I love how wholesome all the characters are to each other. The Caph/Zain/Duke/Alice friendship circle is so cute.

Also, this is why I'll always hate harems. They rarely have another male character for the main guy to interact with in fear of intimidating the sensitive reader base who feel the other guy might 'steal the girls'. The Duke and Zain have a nice bromance going on and it's wonderful to watch.

Hm, I think Alice's mother was murdered by that Dulles girl or whatever, I mean, she's the one who saw the 2 witches that day (I assume that was Dulles and the one who cursed MC), and for whatever reason caught them in the act, and Dulles just had to kill her 'cause she's a witness. For the motive, I guess MC's family have some influence in the witch hunt ? And the ones killed in that hunt were people close to those 2 witches.

Edit: Nvm, now that I think about it again, the heir's succession can easily be transferred to the younger son, so with them cursing only 1 son, there's no harm caused to the family as a whole :/
