Wow, if you commenters have nothing nice to say, then just shush and enjoy the chapters.
It could be real or false, but he/she does decent work and does deserve some coffee money or something.
Time is money, and unless you guys know how to translate words, makes the pictures look neat and clean, and bother to make something readable (screw the grammar nazis complaining about everything)
then don't even bother commenting and bullying the translator/scanlator.

@lonefire I'd say questioning morality in this environment is a moot point. The fact you and I are here, on this site, is already grounds for moral arguments to be disregarded. There are 66 chapters of The Duke of Death and His Black Maid posted on here and have you, and I'm saying you specifically, ever bought a chapter straight from the source to "support the mangaka?" I know for sure I haven't and there's a high chance neither have the 9000+ readers. What I have done is support this website. I've donated $5 in November and another $5 in December to Mangadex because I want to show my appreciation for the service that they provide me. It's unfortunate that I can't support the mangaka directly, but what am I supposed to do with a manga chapter that I can't understand one bit? How do you even go about getting a manga chapter of this series from Japan, if I live in the US?

Your main gripe is that he profits off the mangaka's work. So what? He's just supposed to do this out of the goodness of his heart? You naive fool. We're humans. We live to profit, whether it's monetary or emotionally. If he wants to make a profit off of his scanlation work, why make a big deal of it? Oh, but the mangaka put so much blood, sweat and tears into his work and some guy just comes and translates it to English and all of a sudden he's out some cash. Unfortunately, Japan just does not have a good enough system to accomodate international viewership for ALL of their manga goods. There is a lot of great content out there and it takes a good system to be able to have that content available to us living outside of Japan. I am truly grateful for scanlators being the bridge to this content that would otherwise be hidden, tucked away in Japan with just a sliver of a chance to be seen by an international audience. How much does it matter if Kirei Cake wants to make a profit? How much of an impact does this have on the original mangaka? Unless someone takes the time to really research and provide definitive conclusions on how much damage scanlations do to the Japanese manga market, I'm gonna assume that my viewership of these scanlations don't really impact the Japanese manga market in any meaningful way, where I would assume most of the mangaka's financial stability would come from anyways.

Regarding Kirei Cakes situation, all I have to say is, does it matter if his mom is sick or not? If I choose to donate, I'm not donating to help out his mom. I don't know the guy personally. Why would I care about his situation? I'm donating cause he says it will help bring out more chapters faster. It makes no difference to me if instead of "my mom is sick please support me so I can release more chapters faster" he says "I need more money for beer please support me so I can release more chapters faster". If it ends up that we don't get what we paid for, well that was a bad investment, and I'll learn from that mistake. If you're the type of person to fall for that, I'd say that's more your responsibility than his. Your freedom to choose what you do with your money means that it's also your responsibility. We're not dealing with a corporate company. There's no money back guarantees or return policies. We're dealing with unpaid, freelancer individuals so it's entirely up to you if you decide to support a scanlator or website financially.

What I don't like, is the commenters being overtly toxic to the guy who works to give us a good quality scanlation. We should be thankful and grateful that someone other than ourselves will take the time to do all the work that comes with scanlating and providing that to us for free. Just being on this site is no different than being on a torrenting website, where we selfishly consume the work of other people for free in order to satisfy our own needs. Just take it, show your appreciation, and hope that another chapter gets released. Would you keep scanlating a series if the majority of your comments were hateful comments? I'm gonna assume most likely not, but who knows, I don't know you personally. Don't bite the hand that feeds.

What I don't like is his/her phrasing. The way he phrased it was like we're required to donate to him/her unless we want it translated, and how he/she wants the readers to take responsibility of his/her whole life expenses. I don't mind if he/she says it's for her mother (for many years now actually), that's reasonable. Other groups ask for donations as well. But what? His/her living expenses? Go get a job that is not based on piracy like most or be an actual translator in a publishing business if you really like that. There are other translators/hobbyists that can do that if you ever quit. Don't make the readers take responsibility of your life. And he/she definitely has no business on how readers spend their money cause it's THEIR MONEY. Besides, supporting him/her WON'T support the actual author of the series, unless he buys the raws, but still.

So next time, just ask for donations. Don't add any b***s***. I apologise if I did get the wrong idea.

The most annoying thing though is how he keeps emphasizing on 'loving to translate'. I mean for fucks sake there's a guy in the VN scene right now Tripp who is autistic enough to actually like translating like just doing it as a hobby and has translated enormous titles so far with quality and speed but not once did he sell out to a localisation company or ask for donations. Those guys don't even have a donate button and are actually doing it as a hobby.

But this? The passive aggressiveness and how he only makes about 3% on average. You know what fuck off. Nobody is forcing you to translate. He is simply, literally just begging for money and the just the attitude should piss you off
>you probably make 100x that much anyway
Nah I;m not even gonna go into his post.
Its just disgusting and shameless behavior.

Just wanted to say, it's not "your" series. Asking for money for working on it makes no sense, you are not the author and haven't made any deals with him like official publishers do.

yeah i mostly dont like how the tl says MY series, like wtf? also if you're making hundreds of dollars a month off of someone elses work they deserve to know. lets face it, yes translating is a pain and takes work but doesnt warrant leeching off someone elses creativity, at least this aggressively and shamelessly greedy. shes aiming for 3k a month which is literally what the mangaka probably makes according to google. somethings wrong when this starts happening.

Just a reminder that while users are allowed and encouraged to debate or criticize, let's keep it civil please.

You can attack an action or a position without actually attacking the person themselves. Also, let's not rag on the mother, who may or may not exist. The person whose actions are being discussed is the scanlator.

@encoreblade 's approach is the best one here.

We can't just shame on a translator because he begs for some donation money that most will prolly ignore and won't even give one cent . We still have to respect him as he uploads here, and he let us read all the chaps for free with good edits and no shit.

You guys are just overreacting over this shit. This is why the situation gets worse instead of it getting fixed properly, people can't just calm the fuck down and always let their emotions get over their head.

You people are quick to judge on others yet they can't look at theirselves

You people read shit for free (some buy the actual manga and I respect that)

At least the scanlators buy the manga unlike you ungrateful retards who thinks its the end of a series just because a scanlator begged for 1 dollar

Translator should stop streaming Overwatch and get a real job if her mother is bedridden as she says.

@Renan_Walheim yea, let me leave the bedridden person for 8-10 hours real quick everyday. Did you even think about what you wrote?

Anyhow, you were also asked to stop discussing this subject by a mod.

there's plenty of ways to earn money from home while taking care of a sick person. maybe stream less overwatch and start looking harder for jobs FROM home.
like its fine to ask for some coffee money from the readers if they think we deserve it, but the way this person phrased it, just really rubs people wrong. They made it like as if the readers are in the wrong for not donating to their translation effort

Nobody forcing you to translate.

Heck, I also love to translate, I am doing this with goal to turn pro. Heck, I also thought about setting up patreon or some shit (which i still have not got around to doing) because, as much as I thought this is just some fun hobby, shits adds up. And no i am not talking about the other scanlation meme, the server cost, but the thing about raws is real. Even I'm struggling a little after a while (but that's something I brought upon myself with too much shit to translate).

I have never commented about this kind of stuff before. while i also meme about this 'mother is sick donate me now' on discord, but I really think this person has stepped over the line with this. its really a real low.

How about donate to me too? i demand at least 1000 a month, cause i translate too much and does 99% shit myself, i'm needing surgery in my right hand soon... /sarcasm (though the pain in the hand is real lel)

talk about entitlement with this one. sheesh

Any desire I might've had to donate was just obliterated by that page insert.
I don't mind donating money to scanlators to keep things going, but I'm not paying for someone's living expenses or to help someone turn a profit. If you really want to turn your hobby into money, do it legitimately. That means less free stuff to read for the rest of us but it is what it is.

@lonefire if you don't got time to read, then what's the point. The truth is there is no point. This is just drama.
He's asking, not demanding, for money. Maybe it's the way I took it, but the effect his page insert had on me was the same effect as any other scanlator asking for money.

In the end, I hope we can still look forward to more chapters of The Duke of Death and His Black Maid. If this drama somehow affects that, well, that would definitely suck for both sides.
