1) We live in an age of abundance where bread is no big deal. Not the case in the past. Getting bread could be the difference between living and dying.

2) It's his livelihood, which he needs to keep himself and his family alive. If he starts losing a huge chunk of his business to competition that could also mean the difference between life and death for him and his family.


Moral con: He's likely the type of baker who adulterated his bread. (Search "historical adulteration of bread".))
Moral pro: He begs for the life of his family (which would be "eye for an eye" justice) rather than for himself.
