This whole chapter confuses me.
I mean, I understand that when people are emotional they don't really always make coherent actions, but... this guy knows the book cannot be repaired by anyone except by the main character and his grandpa who is dead, yet he goes and make assumptions sometimes growing in actual insults. The main character is, obviously, a softy and still humbly takes on the job, but in other scenarios he could've just said: "screw you" to that elf kid.
After all, what can the elf do? Wage war on the shop? Having the request refused will leave him with a broken book, just like it has been for the past years, so the main character really has nothing to lose here but a little bit of reputation which can still be excused, since everyone knows about his skills already and the guy was rude as hell.

He thinks that neither the MC nor his grandfather can restore the book, and accepted to bring the book just to spite MC grandfather(that he thought was alive), he didn't bring the book thinking it would be repaired since last time it went back worse than it was send.

Given the whole thing about the elven characters I'm betting the truth is that elf's mother screwed up. It was truly her fault and she couldn't take it and blamed the MC grandfather who accepted it as a failure.
